In the quest for relief from migraines and tension headaches, some individuals have turned to an unconventional method: hair cracking, also known as scalp popping. Popularized on TikTok, this practice involves pulling rapidly on the root of the hair to produce an audible popping sensation.

However, while some tout it as a great remedy, experts caution against it. Dermatologist Muneeb Shah, MD, explains that "the popping sensation is an audible noise produced when the galea aponeurotica separates from the underlying tissue.” Dr. Ross Perry adds that if you do this, "You can easily tear the inside of the scalp which can lead to bleeding and possible infections, it can become sore and extremely uncomfortable.” Furthermore, board-certified cosmetic dermatologist Connie Yang, MD, warns that the trauma from hair cracking can exacerbate inflammation in the scalp, potentially worsening headaches.

Despite the allure of quick-fix solutions, experts emphasize the importance of consulting with a healthcare professional for safe and effective headache relief strategies. After all, it's crucial to prioritize health and well-being over the fleeting promises of internet trends.
