The Browns returned to the practice field today after their day off on Tuesday. Injuries remain a concern as the Browns prepare to take on the Super Bowl Champion NY Giants. Here are a few notes from Berea.

-The team has voted to make DT Ahtyba Rubin as the teams 4th captain for this week’s game. Rubin is known as a quiet leader who keeps to himself.

But Coach Shurmur thought that the 5th season pro was a perfect choice as a captain this week. -Josh Cribbs returned to practice today just 6 days after he sustained a concus

sion against the Baltimore Ravens. Cribbs presence could be significant as the team is light at the wide receiver spot due to injuries.

-Speaking of the injured wide receivers the team was without both Mohamed Massaquoi and Travis Benjamin during the part of practice that was open to the media. Massaquoi is dealing with a hamstring injury; Benjamin’s injury hasn’t been disclosed at this time.

-On the defensive side TJ Ward and Tashaun Gipson both were among the missing in the secondary. Ward has a broken thumb, and Gipson has a knee injury.

-Coach Shurmur feels like between the suspension of Joe Haden and the injuries of others in the secondary, he has the opportunity to learn a lot about some of his younger guys, “We’re dealing with a couple of different situations with the secondary.

Of course, Joe being out is one so that causes us to have to juggle and we’ve had some injuries that we’ve had to deal with as well. We’ve played different types of teams. Some that play in a situation where we’re playing three corners and then we’ve played a couple of teams that are more base so what it’s given us is an opportunity to see some of these other guys compete for a full game and then have to play at a high level.

We’ve learned a great deal about the guys on our roster and I think our guys have been forced to adjust in a lot of ways and I’m pleased at the way they compete. Our guys fight hard; I think that can be said. Now we’ve just got to make sure we play better.”

-One thing that the Browns have learned early on is that Trent Richardson has a nose for the end zone as he already has 3 TD’s. Coach Shurmur thinks it’s just something he was born with, “Some guys have it and some guys don’t.

There are a lot of guys that can get you up and down the field. You’ve seen, there are running backs that can get you up and down the field, and then there are others ones when you give it to them

- I will point to we’ve thrown it to Trent quite a bit where he’s had great production - with the ball in their hands, they kind of see where they fit in the whole deal, and they find a way to get in the end zone. He has that ability.”

-With a documentary being ran tonight on the NFL network on the Browns move to Baltimore, Coach was asked if he will have his team watch the film. “We’re going to have to catch up on that after the season.

I think this time of year, you don’t have much time to read books and watch movies. I’ll be made aware of what goes on in that special this evening. I think the history of the organization is important. I think it’s important that our guys have a feel for who the great players were that played here. As we move forward, I’m more concerned about the 2012 Browns right now.

Again, the first part of your question was, ‘I know you’re worried about right now,’ and you’re right.”
