Browns President Mike Holmgren spoke with the assembled media today in Berea to talk about how his role is changing with the team. Here are some key notes from the press conference.
-Holmgren started the press conference thanking Randy Lerner for the opportunity to be the teams President. Saying that “he forced me to challenge myself in parts of football that I haven’t been a part of before. But I wasn’t able to help enough to get wins.”
-Holmgren went on to say that new owner Jimmy Haslam is a special person as well and when he bought the team he knew that his role would change as Haslam will be a more hands on type owner.
-Holmgren went on to say that his time here was shorter then he had hoped. But felt like the time he and his wife spent here was special.
-Holmgren when asked what his role will be going forward with the Browns he said his emphasis will be on the football side, but he can’t define what his role will be going forward. He did say he hopes he can be there for his coaches and players. -Holmgren did say that he thinks the team is close; we’ve been every ball game this year.
-Holmgren said that he has talked to Haslam about both Pat Shurmur and Tom Heckert. He said that Jimmy knows that he feels that Heckert is a great GM in his opinion and that Pat is a bright young coach who has had to go through a lot of tough situations that many coaches don’t have to go through.
-The 10-29 record speaks for itself, but he said a lot more goes into an organization then that but we did not win enough games. But I hope the table is set. -Holmgren left the door open for him to return to coaching at some point. But said he will take some time after the season to make a decision on how he goes forward. He did admit that he does miss coaching.
-Holmgren was able to admit he made a mistake with his infamous “don’t come asking me for playoff tickets when we get this turned around” comment.
Holmgren admitted he broke a golden rule of his own of coming into the press conference that day angry and to show that he was wrong he asked could he get playoff tickets from the media when the team makes it. He apologized and said he was wrong for making the comment.
