Woman hospitalized, suspected gunman in custody

(Orange Village) - A suspect is in custody and a woman was flown to the hospital after she was shot early Thursday morning outside the Courtyard by Marriott Hotel in Orange Village.

Police Lt. Patrick O'Callahan says the 50 year old guest was leaving the Courtyard when she was approached by a man with a gun, there was a struggle, then shots, and he ran with her purse.

Hotels on Orange Place were placed on lockdown following the shooting as officers searched for the gunman. Guests report law enforcers arrived quickly and sealed off their buildings. Police from Solon, Woodmere and Beachwood assisted in the search for the suspect.

Witnesses tell Newsradio WTAM 1100 suspect bolted across the street after the shooting and was arrested behind the Fairfield Hotel near I-271 after being tracked by police dogs.

The female victim was flown to MetroHealth Medical Center, but is expected to fully recover. O'Callahan reports they are trying to determine the identity of the suspect. He says the crime appears to have been a random robbery.
