Comments were recorded in a police interview room

(Chardon) --  A judge in Geauga County says jurors at T.J. Lane's trial for the deadly shooting at Chardon High School will be allowed to hear taped comments by the suspect's relatives while they were in a police interrogation room.

A Geauga County judge on Thursday rejected the effort by Lane's defense to bar the conversations from his murder trial next month.

Prosecutors say there's no reasonable expectation of privacy while Lane's relatives talked among themselves in a police interview room. The suspect's relatives say they didn't know they were being recorded.

The 18-year-old Lane is charged in the shootings at Chardon High School that killed three students last February. He's being tried as an adult and filed an insanity plea.

Investigators say Lane admitted shooting at students but he didn't know why.
