(Cleveland)- A Euclid man has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for raping his mother in law.

41-year-old Clifton Fields previously pleaded guilty to the 2 counts of rape and kidnapping charges. Fields will now be labeled a Tier III sex offender which means he will have to register his address every 90 days for the rest of his life, once he gets out of prison.

Fields has an extensive criminal history. In 1994 he was convicted of receiving stolen property, 2004 there were domestic violence and drug abuse charges and 2008 a robbery charge. He has never served time in jail.

Cuyahoga County Assistant Prosecutor Frankie Goldberg says, "In her 21 year career this is one of the most horrific cases she has ever encountered. Not only did he victimize his own mother in law but the victim was handicapped."

She describes the 65-year-old victim as a hero for coming forward. The victim called Life Alert saying she had an alleged stroke to get away from Fields. After she was taken away, she told medics she was raped by her son in law twice.

Goldberg believes the sentence will send the message that we need to be vigilant in advocating for our senior population.
