Brian Diamond avoided prison.

(Cleveland)- A Columbia Station man convicted of stealing bells from an Olmsted Township church has been sentenced.

34-year-old Brian Diamond will spend two years on probation and was ordered Wednesday to pay $641 restitution.

The brass bells valued as $5,500 were taken from St. Innocent Orthodox Church. Diamond used a power saw to remove them and sold the bells for scrap metal.

After being arrested on August 28, 2012, Diamond began sweating and complained of chest pains. He was taken to a nearby hospital. When he was released, police were putting him in their vehicle when he kicked at the officer and fled. Police found him shortly thereafter hiding in a nearby marsh.

On December 7, 2012, Diamond plead guilty to one count of theft and one count of escape. The bells were returned.
