Drug death epidemic in Lorain County

Leaders battling a spike in heroin and prescription drug overdoses.

(Elyria) - Last year in Lorain County there were 60 deaths from illicit drugs, compared to 22 in 2011.

Police say more people are abusing heroin and prescription drugs, and with pushers providing heroin that is far more potent than years past and is nearly 100% pure.

In the City of Lorain overdose calls are up 46% from 2008, but even Avon Lake and Amherst first responders says they are receiving more drug overdose calls.

Drugs are taking so many lives in Lorain County, the coroner has formed a county think tank to come up with solutions to the problem.
