Police locate suspect several hours later.
(Wickliffe) - Police have arrested the man suspected of robbing a Speedway Gas Station Monday.
At about 2:00 pm on Monday, the Wickliffe Police Department arrested 32-year-old Joseph Pietropaolo in connection with the robbery that occurred earlier in the day.
At around 7:18am, the Speedway Gas Station at the corner of Euclid Avenue and Lloyd Road in Wickliffe was robbed at knifepoint.
An older attendant was injured in the elbow when she slipped trying to escape to the back of the store during the robbery. The suspect told one employee he's a drug addict, that's why he needed the money. He got away with a cash register and money.
The suspect was then involved in an accident in his get-away vehicle at Euclid and Lloyd. No one was hurt in the crash.
Wickliffe Detectives were driving in known drug areas near the Cleveland/East Cleveland border checking for the getaway vehicle in the robbery – a 1992 blue Chevy Blazer (with a red driver’s door and lift gate) that had been stolen in Willowick moments before the gas station robbery.
Detectives spotted the vehicle traveling on Woodworth Avenue in East Cleveland and contacted the East Cleveland Police Department for assistance. After a vehicle chase and a struggle with officers, Pietropaolo was arrested.
He has been charged with one count of aggravated robbery and additional charges are expected to be filed in the future.
