Committee members take his name off the list of nominees

(Canton) - Art Modell DOES NOT get in to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Word from New Orleans is that he did not make the first cut of candidates. There were 15 nominees, going in to today's deliberations. 46 Hall of Fame committee members narrowed them down to 10. Modell was not on the short list.

The arguments were strong, on both sides of the debate. Supporters of a Modell enshrinement point to his impact on the game. As the owner of the Cleveland Browns in the 1960s, he was involved in negotiating television contracts that brought the NFL into more households. His decisions helped pave the way for Monday Night Football and the collective bargaining agreement, with the players. His teams won a championship and a Super Bowl.

The naysayers bring back Modell's firing of coach Paul Brown, speeding up Jim Brown's retirement, because they were in a contract dispute, the trade of wide receiver Paul Warfield, the high profile signing of Andre Rison, in the 1990s, financial losses, and of course, The Move.
