Crews respond to Birch Hill Drive.

(Medina) - The Medina Fire Department tackled a large fire at the Birch Run Apartment complex at 570 Birch Hill Drive Thursday morning

Three units on the upper floors of the complex were destroyed. The fire chief says some of the structure may have to be torn down.

Medina Fire Chief Bob Painter says the call came in at 4:10am, and when firefighters arrived flames were raging, and they took a defensive stance. It took 2 hours to being under control.

Painter says the blaze apparently began outside the first upstairs unit, with 3 apartments totally destroyed, and several others affected. That wing of the complex may have to be torn down.

Among those affect is Lynette Daugherty who lived in the 3rd upstairs unit. She lost everything but was able to save her cats. Daugherty says she was awakened by the screams of her neighbors, as her apartment filled with thick smoke.

Eight families have been displaced by the fire, but no one was injured.

The cause is under investigation.
